Switching between light and dark mode

Use the theme toggle to switch between dark and light themes and how it is remembered.

Why theme choice matters

Laminar supports Light, Dark, and System theme modes so users can work comfortably, regardless of lighting conditions, device settings, or personal preference. The theme you choose affects the entire interface—sidebar, top bar, lists, forms, detail pages, and visual accents throughout the app.

A good theme choice can reduce eye strain, improve focus, and help create a consistent workspace throughout your day.

Laminar’s theming is designed to be simple: you choose your preference, and the app adapts instantly.

Where to find theme settings

You can change your theme from the My Profile screen. To get there:

  1. Click your avatar in the top bar (far right).
  2. Select My Profile from the dropdown menu.
  3. Scroll to the Appearance or Theme section.

In this section, you’ll see a set of theme options, each represented by an icon:

  • System – follows your device’s current light/dark preference
  • Light – bright and clean
  • Dark – low-contrast, eye-friendly for night and long sessions

Your selection applies immediately.

Tip If you often switch between bright offices and dark environments, try using System so Laminar follows your device settings automatically.

Understanding the theme options

Laminar keeps theme options simple but powerful. Here’s how each one behaves:

System theme

Laminar follows the appearance your device reports:

  • If your operating system is set to Light mode → Laminar uses Light
  • If your OS automatically switches to Dark at sunset → Laminar switches too

This option is ideal if your device already manages themes for you.

Light theme

A bright, airy interface ideal for:

  • Collaborative work environments
  • Well-lit offices
  • Quickly scanning lists and tables
  • Detailed reading

This theme uses soft backgrounds and clear borders to create a clean workspace.

Dark theme

A low-glare interface that many users prefer for:

  • Evening or night work
  • Long sessions
  • Reducing eye strain
  • Viewing designs or contrast-sensitive content

All modules—Suppliers, Components, BOMs, Orders, and more—render with darker backgrounds and lighter text for better legibility.

How theme changes apply

When you select a new theme:

  • The change happens immediately
  • You stay on the same page you were on
  • Lists, detail screens, menus, panels, and overlays adapt in place
  • All module screens follow the same appearance
  • The next time you sign in, Laminar remembers your choice

You don’t need to reload or navigate away. Laminar’s theme system is designed to be instant and seamless.

Where the theme affects your experience

Your theme selection updates all major areas of the UI:

Sidebar

Dark or light background and subtle highlighting for active modules.

Top bar

The search bar, icons, and New menu adjust contrast and color.

Navigation panels

Panels such as the user menu and organisation switcher follow the theme.

Lists, tables, and cards

Headers, row backgrounds, borders, and text change to provide clear contrast in both themes.

Detail screens

Information sections, action areas, and document cards adapt for readability.

Forms

Input fields, dropdowns, and buttons maintain consistent visibility across themes.

Note If something looks “too bright” or “too dark”, switching themes is often the quickest fix.

When to switch themes

Users often change themes based on:

  • Environment – bright office vs. dim home workspace
  • Time of day – morning vs. evening
  • Task type – long reading sessions vs. quick operational updates
  • Personal comfort – whichever feels least tiring

There’s no right or wrong choice—Laminar works equally well in all modes.

If you’re unsure which theme to use, try Dark for a few minutes, then switch to Light. Most users recognise a preferred mode almost instantly.

Mobile and tablet behaviour

Laminar’s themes carry over to mobile and tablet views. Whether you're reviewing a BOM on your phone, editing a supplier on a tablet, or browsing orders on a laptop, your chosen theme applies consistently across all device sizes.

If your device itself switches between Light and Dark modes on a schedule, choosing System ensures Laminar switches along with it.

Troubleshooting theme issues

“Nothing changed after choosing a theme.”

Ensure you're signed in—theme settings apply only to in-app screens, not the sign-in page.

“The theme switched automatically.”

This happens when you're using the System option and your device changed appearance.

“Some colours look odd compared to my colleagues’ screens.”

Verify that you’re using the same theme as they are. Themes apply per user, so settings can differ across accounts.

“Items look too bright in Light mode or too dark in Dark mode.”

Try switching themes for the specific environment you’re in. Laminar aims for comfort across various lighting conditions.

“My theme changed after clearing browser data.”

Laminar stores your theme preference in your account and browser. If browser data was cleared, simply choose your preferred theme again.

Best practices

  • Use Light mode in bright environments for better clarity.

  • Try System for the most automated experience.
  • Switch themes freely—Laminar updates instantly without disrupting your work.
